Round
the Island...
Introduction:
The country’s largest and most famous yachting race, the JPMorgan
Asset Management Round the Island Race, takes place at Cowes on the Isle
of Wight during June every year.
Competitors
come from all over Europe and the USA to join in the fun and spectacle
of nearly 2,000 boats racing around the Isle of Wight on a 50 mile course
that takes you past the famous Needles landmark, around the back of the
Isle of Wight and back into the Solent in time for dinner.
Whether you compete regularly or are new to the sport, you will enjoy
superb racing in some of the country's best sailing waters. Persuasion
and Perseverance take approximately 8-9 hours depending on wind. The 2005
Round the Island Persuasion and Perseverance finished within 4 minutes
of each other in the very respectable top half of the fleet.
The Round the Island Race, hosted by the Island Sailing Club, was first
sailed in 1931, and today sailors are still competing for the legendary
Gold Roman Bowl. Now known as the JPMorgan Asset Management Round the
Island Race, it is one of the world's biggest yacht races. Over 1600 yachts
of all sizes compete, each with a handicap, which ensures that everyone
- Olympic medallists and weekend sailors alike - has a fair race.
